The city is setting up a committee to move the riverfront plan along

Frankfort’s riverfront plan has a lot of ideas in it. Now the city wants a committee to help turn them into projects.

At the Board of Commissioners’ Oct. 12 meeting, City Manager Jason Monroe made the case for a riverfront development committee and suggested Mayor Layne Wilkerson and one commissioner serve on it. “The riverfront development is big,” Monroe said, according to The State Journal. “Sasaki came in and did the plan for us, and we’re slowly trying to work that plan.”

Commissioner Rob Richardson said the committee’s meetings will be open to the public. Wilkerson called riverfront development “one of the more crucial things we do over the next few years.”

No vote was taken. The State Journal reports that the order creating the committee will come up at the board’s next meeting, and members will be nominated in January. The city calendar lists the next regular meeting for Monday, Oct. 26, at 5 p.m.

A quick refresher

In January, the commission hired Boston design firm Sasaki ($333,853) to write a riverfront plan covering the river from Capital View Park to Buffalo Trace. At the same Oct. 12 meeting, the board agreed to apply for a federal Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership grant for Broadway Linear Park, planned between Washington Street and Wilkinson Boulevard. It’s estimated at $2.5 million, and the city is asking for $1.25 million, to be matched.
